Our Coaches

Jonathan Mason joined the staff of the Yellowknife Gymnastics Club in the spring of 2004. He comes to us from England via Calgary and Terrace. Jon has been involved in gymnastics for many years, as both a competitive athlete and a coach. He is a builder and has worked very hard to expand and improve the programs which the club offers. Jon coaches recreational gymnastics, and is responsible for the boys competitive programs.

Leopoldo (Polo) Gil arrived in Yellowknife in August, 2009 and will be coaching recreational programs as well as being responsible for the girls competitive programs.  Polo came to Canada in 2006 and has been working with the Gymtastics Gymnastics Club in Calgary since his arrival.  Prior to that he worked in a club in Guadalajara, Mexico.  During his athletic career, Polo competed as an elite gymnast in Mexico.

John Tram has been involved with the Yellowknife Gymnastics Club for many years, first as a gymnast and more recently as a visiting coach and judge for many of our men's competitions.   John competed for the Northwest Territories during his competitive career and won a number of medals at the national level.   For the last number of years, John has been the men's coach at Westwind Gymnastics in Lethbridge, where he was attending University.  John has now completed his university studies and will be helping out with the boys program as well as some recreational programs as a part time coach.

Jane Borkovik is also a former gymnast in our programs.  While she was with the club as a gymnast, Jane represented the Club and the Northwest Territories a number of times at Arctic Winter Games and other competitions.   Jane will be helping out with the CanGym recreational programs.

Michelle Pulvermarcher is an enthusiastic and energetic coach and former gymnast who has recently completed the Fundamentals Coaching program and is just starting her coaching career.  Michelle will be coaching preschool programs on Saturday mornings.

Jessie Smith participated in the programs of the Yellowknife Gymnastics Club for many years growing up in Yellowknife.   Jessie now has her own young family and has enrolled her children in our programs and returned to the Club as a coach.  Jessie will be working with the preschool classes on Saturday mornings.

Thum Foliot is a current competitive gymnast with the Yellowknife Gymnastics Club, hoping to represent the Northwest Territories at the Arctic Winter Games in March, 2010.  For the last two years, Thum has been helping out with coaching in the gym as a coach in training and has recently completed the Fundamentals Coaching program which will allow her to coach classes on her own.  She will be helping with the preschool and CanGym programs.

Keith Wong has been working as a volunteer coach with our Club for many years, primarily with the adult drop in classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.  He also helps out with both the recreational and the competitive programs from time to time as needed to fill in.

Mary Sullivan works most of the time in the office keeping everything running smoothly.  She has, however, just completed her Fundamental Coaching course and is available to step in as needed if one of our coaches is traveling with the competitive athletes or is otherwise unable to take a class.
