Parent's Responsibilities

As a parent, you have a responsibility to:

  1. Encourage your child and other athletes in the Yellowknife Gymnastics Club to abide by the YGC code of conduct for athletes.
  2. Encourage your child to perform and train to the best of his/her abilities and, when he/she does so, praise his/her efforts and provide positive reinforcement and encouragement for him/her to continue. Never ridicule or shout at your child or at any athlete for errors or poor performance in a competition.
  3. Ensure that, to the best of your ability, your child conducts him/herself in a safe and respectful way in the gym and in a manner that minimizes physical or psychological risks to him/herself or others in the gym.
  4. Help create an environment in the gym which will make gymnastics an enjoyable activity for your child, one through which he/she will develop skills that will make him/her a better person. Teach your child that honest efforts are as important as rewards.
  5. Remember that your child does, or should do, gymnastics for his/her enjoyment and development, not yours.
  6. Refrain from criticism of coaches, officials, administrative staff, board members or other athletes in the presence of your child and, if you do feel criticism is merited, offer it in a constructive manner that will produce positive results and in an appropriate setting.
  7. To the extent that you reasonably can, offer your talents and time to the Yellowknife Gymnastics Club and support and encourage other volunteers who are doing so.
  8. If you have a question or concern, our office staff or your child's coach should be able to help you.  However, please do not interrupt a coach during a class...there is usually a few minutes at the end of the class to speak to the coaches.   If you are not satisfied with the response, you can speak to either of our senior coaches, Jon or Polo.   If you still feel your concerns have not been addressed, please speak to the board's parent liaison (tschauerte@theedge.ca).
