Competitive Teams

The Yellowknife Gymnastics Club has both men's and women's competitive teams in artistic gymnastics.

There are five levels of Competitive Gymnastics in Canada - Levels I through V.  Within each "level" there are different age categories so each child competes within a certain age range. The differences between each "Level" are the gymnastics skills required.

Physical preparation is an integral part of these programs, with emphasis on skill development, body awareness, strength and flexibility. Boys are trained on six events: floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, and high bar. Girls train on four events: floor exercise, vault, beam and uneven bars.  Routines are taught on these events to prepare gymnasts for one or more competitions during the competitive season (January - June).

As your child progresses the coach will determine which age category and level are appropriate. Athletes in this program have usually progressed through the Pre competitive programs on invitation of the coaches.

Age Range:
Length of Program:
Training Time:
9 years and up
12 months
12 - 18 hours per week (3 - 5 days a week)

Competitive Opportunities:

We normally have at least three "in house" meets each year, and the competitive teams normally travel to meets in southern Canada two or three times during each competitive season.

Competitive Clothing:

Competitive athletes will be required to purchase club competition attire for competitions

Competitive fund raising opportunities:

Every year we attempt to provide our competitive athletes a number of fund raising opportunities to help defray the cost of competition suits and travel.  The Club will keep track of all monies raised in this manner and allocate them among those who participate in the fund raising event.  You will be provided with a statement of how much is in your account periodically and you can direct that it be used for travel or competition suits.  If your child leaves the program without using all of the funds his or her account, that money stays with the club and be used to help defray the costs of coach travel or new equipment.
